“(John Luther is) a character I’ve been playing for 10 years. So excited to have it on a bigger scale now as a movie. Did five seasons. If you’ve never seen Luther, you could start now. […] I think we got something really special.”

“We have nothing but love for the Bond franchise. It is always something I respect and am very proud of that rumor.”

“I don’t think they’re similar, but both (James Bond and John Luther) are big characters. The worlds they inhabit can be big, especially now, Luther is … we can take him from London and put him in Argentina or wherever we want. Luther has the sort of scale now.”

– Idris Elba explains the one similarity between Luther and Bond, while speaking with Extra at the New York premiere of Luther: The Fallen Sun, which also stars Cynthia Erivo and Andy Serkis. Fans have called for the actor to step into the role of British MI6 agent James Bond since 2021’s No Time to Die was Daniel Craig’s fifth and final time playing the iconic character. But now that Luther has hit the big screen, Elba says he’s ready to go bigger, “I want to do a franchise.”

Luther: The Fallen Sun‘s synopsis is: “Brilliant but disgraced detective John Luther breaks out of prison to hunt down a sadistic serial killer who is terrorizing London.” It’s available in theaters and on Netflix.
