When it comes to Disney vacations, most people picture castles, parades, and thrilling rides. But just a short boat ride away from the Magic Kingdom Park lies a world where serene cypress groves meet modern luxury – The Cabins at Disney’s Fort Wilderness Resort. If you’re craving a getaway that blends nature’s peace with Disney’s signature magic, this is your next stop.

A Little Bit of Disney History Enveloped in Wilderness
Since 1971, Fort Wilderness has been Disney World’s rustic retreat that boasts 750 acres of pine and cypress forest where ducks, deer, rabbits, and armadillo freely roam. Long beloved for its laidback charm, the resort has always offered a different side of Disney. Think cozy campsites, scenic trails, and a community feel that’s more country lodge than theme park.
The Cabins at Fort Wilderness, which opened in Summer 2024, are an upscale escape that remains rooted in nature.

Your Cabin in the Woods — With a Luxe Twist
Forget everything you thought you knew about “cabins.” These cabins are modern, spacious, and decked out with all the comforts of a boutique hotel. We’re talking sleek wood finishes, vaulted ceilings, and open floor plans that make family gatherings feel effortless. With accommodations that sleep up to six, each cabin features a full kitchen, a private patio, and even a laundry, which is ideal for extended stays.

Step outside, and you’re enveloped in the soothing sights and sounds of Florida’s wilderness, but the plush bedding and spa-like bathrooms inside remind you this is luxury living in disguise.

Golf Carts, Archery, and Old-School Disney Fun
One of Fort Wilderness’s most charming traditions is zipping around on a golf cart. Actually, it’s practically a must there. These electric carts make exploring the sprawling resort a breeze, whether you’re headed to the Trading Post for snacks, cruising to the beach for sunset views, or simply riding along and appreciating the towering pine trees.
When it comes to activities, Fort Wilderness is a playground for all ages. Fancy channeling your inner Robin Hood? The resort’s archery experience lets guests learn the art of the bow in a wooded range, like I did on my Adventures by Disney South Africa trip a couple of years ago. There’s also horseback riding, canoeing, fishing, and even campfire sing-alongs under the stars.

Guests can also make a splash at Meadow Swimmin’ Pool, where you’ll find a corkscrew waterslide, whirlpool spa, and a fort-themed water play area that’s perfect for little ones. For a more relaxing experience, head to Wilderness Swimmin’ Pool, a quiet all-ages spot with its own whirlpool spa.

Musical Review! Courtesy of Disney
For dinner, don’t miss Hoop-Dee-Doo Musical Revue, one of Disney World’s longest-running and most beloved dinner shows. With its rollicking music, laugh-out-loud humor, and a down-home feast of fried chicken; BBQ ribs; macaroni and cheese; cornbread; and some of the tastiest strawberry shortcake I’ve ever had, it’s a nice cap to a full day of fun and adventure.

Magic Kingdom: Just a Boat Ride Away
Despite its secluded feel, Fort Wilderness offers effortless access to the heart of Disney magic. A leisurely boat ride whisks you across Bay Lake straight to the Magic Kingdom Park’s gates. So you can spend your morning spotting deer and your afternoon meeting Mickey – talk about the best of both worlds.
Sneak Peek: Island Tower at Disney’s Polynesian Resort
While we’re talking Disney luxury, stay tuned for our upcoming feature on the recently opened Island Tower at Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort. Redefining tropical elegance with its sweeping views and elevated DVC accommodations, the Island Tower is certainly a new jewel in Disney’s crown. More on that soon!
The Takeaway
The Cabins at Fort Wilderness offer a unique Disney experience that’s equal parts adventure and indulgence. Whether you’re roasting marshmallows under the stars, perfecting your archery stance, or luxuriating in your woodland hideaway, you’ll discover a side of Walt Disney World that feels fresh, freeing, and wonderfully fun.
