“I deal with a lot of very serious health conditions–lupus being one of them with organ involvement–and so I don’t think people understand when I go on that stage I’m literally putting my life on the line and giving it my all with one functioning lung, so to have that help to have that support so that I could soar over the top of it and then sometimes it’s a good day and my lungs what to behave like today and I’ll be able to really give y’all some notes.”

– Muni Long discusses the impact her health conditions, including lupus, have on her singing career and performance life with Entertainment Tonight’s Kevin Frazier, while walking the red carpet of the BET Awards 2025. According to the National Institutes of Health, lupus is an autoimmune disease in which a person’s immune system attacks its own tissues, instead of protecting the body from infection and disease. The attacks cause inflammation and can result in permanent damage to the lung, as in Muni’s case; skin; joints; heart; kidneys; circulating bloods cells; and brain. Although, the Gifford, Florida native wasn’t slated to perform during the awards ceremony, she did sing a little ditty she and her two-year-old son wrote to encourage his potty training.
