Pilot Sets Guinness World Record for Hula Hooping While Skating Backwards

Guinness World Record-holding skater and hula hooper Veronica Harris says her style of fitness requires physical, as well as mental strength.

Pilot Veronica Harris can not only make an airplane defy gravity but also a hula hoop. The 54-year-old fitness buff recently set two Guinness World Records at the same time.

Harris now holds the record for longest duration roller skating backwards while hula hooping, with 33 minutes and 1 second. She also set the record for the longest duration roller skating backwards while spinning three hula hoops at 5 minutes and 4 seconds.

“I love skating, but I am passionate about hula hooping,” said Harris in an interview with Guinness World Records

The Houstonian perfected her hula hoop technique after seeking out a means to strengthen her abs without boring and painful sit-ups.

“One day the idea of hula hooping came to me, and a quick internet search confirmed that hula hooping was an excellent core workout,” she told Guinness.

“So, I bought a weighted hula hoop and quickly got a reality check since hula hooping was not like getting on a bike,” continued the record holder who had hula hooped as a child.

With a lot of practice, which was oftentimes at 4 a.m., Harris was able to not only combine roller skating and hula hooping, but also learned to skate backwards.

“It is not natural for us to move backwards, so in order to learn how to skate backwards I did it slowly,” said Harris, who would travel with her hula hoop on days she was flying a plane.

She says this activity takes as much mental concentration as physicality.

“You have to get to know your hoops,” Harris told Guinness. “You must also master your mind.”

So what’s next for Harris? She hopes to earn the record title for the longest duration roller skating while hula hooping around the neck.

“Many people have asked me why I decided to go for a Guinness World Records title,” said Harris. “I wanted to show people that it is never too late to go for it.”
