Your Weekend Radar: Eat, Drink, Dance
You need something to do this weekend. Here are some options to put on your radar - from rooftop meetups to pop-up BBQs to twerk fitness.
NEW YORK: STEELY SIPS
LOCL View, the new pop-up rooftop bar on NYLO Hotel’s 16th floor, boasts stunning views of the Natural History Museum, Central Park and the Hudson River. The industrial-designed space merges with the building’s Jazz Era touches to offer the fashionable after-work crowd wine, beer and a rotating weekly cocktail list.
DETROIT: HOT IN LAGOS
On Saturday nights, Tunde Wey of Revolver restaurant hosts a boisterous pop-up Nigerian BBQ he calls Lagos. Walk-ins are a crap shoot for this casual, cash-only Mexicantown spot, so savvy cats make reservations for one of the two coveted nightly seatings. The menu’s simple: Yoruba and Igbostyle skewered suya beef and fish (take heed to the “it’s spicy, no joke” warning) and savory side dishes.
CHICAGO: WORK IT OUT
Janet Jones, a former Miami Heat dancer, created the Vixen Workout to get your sweat out and sexy on without using a tedious treadmill. Classes encourage women to get low, twerk and shake their thangs in a club-like atmosphere. Bring wedge sneakers for the intense, 60-minute head-to-toe cardio session and expect to burn up to 1,000 calories.
CHARLOTTE: DANCE REVOLUTION
It’s a feat to find a good old-fashioned dance emporium, but you will at Latorre’s Disco. Forget about the tired two-step, there are free salsa lessons every week, along with dance parties filled with bachata, merengue and hip-hop. The drink specials make it easier for peeps to get their hips in motion.
