Uptown’s Kickin’ It
After an eight-year hiatus, the internationally renown Dance Theater of Harlem has returned with a U.S. tour that kicked off in October, and that culminates with a run at New York’s revered Jazz at Lincoln Center in April 2013. The company, founded by former New York City Ballet principal dancer Arthur Mitchell and the now deceased Karel Shook in a church basement, has enjoyed more than 40 years of acclaim with its daring works and lauded school, which has trained many greats. New Artistic Director Virginia Johnson is building on the company’s past success by embracing the future. “We look forward to inspiring a new generation of dancers who are prepared to give our audiences—and this art form— everything they’ve got,” says Johnson.
