Get Glitzy in L.A.
February isn’t just Black History Month in Los Angeles--it’s the month of stars. GRAMMY weekend is upon us, followed by the NAACP Image Awards and the Oscars. But in our book, there is never a bad time to visit the City of Angels, so why not take a walk to the other best coast?
Sunset Boulevard Digs: West Hollywood is known for being funky, and Hyatt captures that spirit with Andaz. Meaning “personal style” in Hindi, Andaz thrives on being chill. Employees look more like cool guests you want to party with. The decor is sleek and modern with surprisingly big rooms, and those with views of Sunset Boulevard offer the ultimate in people-watching. Healthy snacks and water are complimentary for the room, but for a more hearty meal, feast downstairs at RH. Post-grub, the Sundeck is a great choice for marveling at the moon. Live entertainment is just steps away at the neighboring Comedy Store and perennial music stronghold The House of Blues.
Eat/Lounge: Revered steakhouse STK is just a short jaunt from the Andaz. The Bazaar at SLS is a bit further down the street. The restaurant-slash-boutique is a unique assault on the senses in everything from the vegetables to souvenirs. On the weekends, the bar (officially known as Bar Centro) hops. Nearby is the much more serene Patisserie where you can nab a singular bon-bon, among other sweet things.
L.A. Nights: Scoring entry into The Sayers Club doesn’t come easy and is mostly reserved for the A-List private party set. As of late The Roxbury has been a big hit, attracting the likes of Rihanna, Drake, and Chris Brown.
Touristy Exploits: A tour of Hollywood star’s homes is so TMZ, but a stroll along the Hollywood Walk of Fame on Hollywood and Vine is a different story. With stars for Don Cornelius, Marian Anderson, Muhammad Ali, Debbie Allen, Harry Belafonte, Sean “Diddy” Combs, and many others, black history is on display year-round. Get to The GRAMMY Museum in the L.A. Live District before the James Brown exhibit comes down February 13, but rest assured the Michael Jackson exhibit will live on eternally.
Dream Ride: Get into the floss-Angeles spirit by putting the pedal to the metal. Enter Worldwide Rent-A-Car in the Platinum Group where you, too, can stunt like somebody’s daddy in a Lamborghini LP560 or a Maserati Gran Turismo, among others, for a much smaller fortune.
