Brenda Watts, former lunch lady at the North Springs high school in Atlanta is under investigation for operating a student a la` carte line, without a cash register, documents or records of transactions. Watts, who worked for the high school since 1987, ran a lone blue cart in the cafeteria, where students were able to purchase food a la` carte. Her cart was the only one without a cash register, while the remaining four lunch lines had registers. Police believe that’s how Watts pocketed the cash, stealing approximately $500 dollars a day. Authorities calculate that’s $2,500 a week, a mind blowing $90,000 a school year. Over 15 years, that would total $1,350,000.
According to the arrest warrants, Watts lives in a five-bedroom, 5,400 square-foot home in south DeKalb County. No one answered the door when a reporter stopped at Watt’s home for comment. Moments later, a late model Mercedes pulled out of the garage, driving away.
Watts retired last June shortly after WSB-TV broke the news.
