Los Angeles Clippers forward Matt Barnes is done with teamwork and fighting his teammates’ battles, or so he says, after being ejected from Wednesday’s game.
During the game, Barnes shoved Oklahoma City Thunder forward Serge Ibaka and was ejected in the second quarter with 6.2 seconds left on the clock. Ibaka blocked a shot by Clipper forward Blake Griffith and the pair became entangled. Barnes mistakenly thought Ibaka shoved Griffith and retaliated. Both teams then struggled to keep the situation from escalating.
Barnes frustrated because he was benched, took to Twitter to vent during the third quarter. He posted:
“I love my teammates like family, but I’m DONE standing up for these n—as! All this s— does is cost me money.”
Barnes quickly deleted the tweet before the game’s end, realizing that like teamwork, tweeting can be costly.
Outrage at Barnes referring to his teammates as “n—as” came from both the players and the front office.
“I think he’s very emotional and down that he got thrown out … but the choice of words obviously, that’s not a word I’m a fan of in all venues,” Clippers coach Doc Rivers said.
Barnes has been suspended four times since 2008 and, despite the deleted tweet, hopefully Barnes realizes that his idea of teamwork will inevitably lead his team to be done with him.
