This past weekend, 5-year-old drum major Taranza McKelvin made his debut at Glades Central High School of Belle Glade, Florida. For anyone unfamiliar with band culture, the drum major is like the star of the show. He leads the band and is usually responsible for getting the crowd hyped up. And little McKelvin did just that.
He went to the high school’s band camp over the summer after expressing interest in being part of a marching band. The band director, Charles Moorer, told WPTV: “He catches on a lot faster than most of my students, he’s a very unique kid.”
His debut was even more impressive because it came during the Muck Bowl, the biggest game in the Glades. “I was nervous when I first got out into the field, but then I just performed,” said Mckelvin.
