For those who don’t know, the spat started over a spoof Kimmel made of Kanye’s hour-long BBC interview with Zane Lowe. In the interview, Kanye called himself the biggest rock star in the world and discussed his frustration about being looked over and unheard in the predominantly white fashion industry. Kimmel had two children reenact part of the interview while sipping milkshakes.
Yeezy immediately took to Twitter to criticize Kimmel and demand an apology. “JIMMY KIMMEL IS OUT OF LINE TO TRY AND SPOOF IN ANY WAY THE FIRST PIECE OF HONEST MEDIA IN YEARS,” was the first of a string of all-caps tweets. Kimmel continued to act cavalier about the entire thing, joking, “Finally, I’m in a rap feud.”
Many sided with Kimmel and chalked the whole thing up to Kanye being Kanye and flying off the handle as usual. However, there was a growing mass that defended Kanye’s reaction, most notably Ayesha Siddiqi.
Although I think it’s ridiculous to believe that his interview was the first piece of honest media in years, I’m totally siding with Kanye on this one. Being replaced by a child is demeaning and I don’t see how Kimmel doesn’t understand that. I’m very interested to see how this interview plays out tonight.
For his part, Kimmel tweeted this about tonight’s show:
