Whoopi Goldberg has been tapped to star in and executive produce Lifetime TV’s film adaptation of A Day Late and a Dollar Short by scribe Terry McMillan, according to Deadline.com. The novel was acquired nearly two years ago, but will finally get its chance to play out on the small screen.
Goldberg is set to play “an irascible matriarch who learns that her next asthma attack is likely to kill her, and she sets out to fix her fractured family before [she] dies.”
Stephen Tolkin (Brothers & Sisters) will serve as director of the project.
The choice to cast Goldberg in the upcoming film seems to have been a no-brainer; the 57-year-old talk show host/actress co-starred in McMillan’s film adaptation of How Stella Got Her Groove Back alongside Angela Bassett and Taye Diggs.
Production will reportedly begin this summer for a 2014 premiere.
