On deck for Oprah’s Next Chapter is a group of Hollywood’s finest, as they discuss everything under the sun from fierce competition within the industry to Black actresses facing a major crisis.
“We’re in crisis mode as Black actresses, not only in the sheer number of roles that are offered and that are out there, but the quality of the roles and therein lies the problem. We’re in deprivation mode because me, Alfre, Phylicia and [Oprah], we’re in the same category. Whereas if you take a Caucasian actress, you have the ones who are the teens and then twenties, thirties, forties, fifties … and they’re all different. There’s roles for each of them. But when you only have two or three categories for Black actresses, therein lies the problem because you want to work! So it’s a natural instinct. If you throw a piece of cheese in a room full of rats, then they’re going to claw at each other. It’s natural.”
