Talent, charisma and opportunity seem like the makings of a stellar, long-lasting career. But in these cases, not so much.
I hate to beat a dead horse, but when the proverbial shoe fits, you have to wear it. Lauryn Hill has been an epic disappointment for her legions of fans for so many years.
After solidifying her place as a hip-hop legend with her classic role in the Fugees and her super successful solo album, Ms. Hill ditched all things glitz and glam with a vengeance.
Five kids, a gargantuan tax bill and a decade later, she re-emerged to perform in front of sold-out crowds, but received some dismal reviews. She was said to be appallingly tardy, so much so that when she finally arrived, the set was sped up to the point of being beyond recognition.
But all hope is not lost. This past weekend, Hill released her first song in nearly three years and finally paid off hundreds of thousands of dollars in taxes on the eve of her sentencing. As the singer faces up to a year in prison, I’m rooting for Lauryn to get back on her feet.
