Ahead of President Obama’s inauguration ceremony, stars from all over the entertainment world made their way to Washington, D.C.’s Harman Center for the Arts on Sunday for Russell Simmons’ 2013 Hip Hop Inaugural Ball.
Similar to 2009’s event, the media mogul aimed to highlight the genre’s influence in Obama’s re-election by honoring artists such as Swizz Beatz, 2 Chainz and John Legend, as well hip-hop pioneers MC Lyte, Doug E. Fresh and others.
“I think hip-hop had a role in making sure we elected a Black president in America because we made it so that Black people were in people’s homes […] through our music and through our culture,” Legend told reporters. “I think it made Barack Obama and more people like him possible, so I’m really thankful for hip-hop and the role it plays in society.”
