How could anyone forget the vicious incident in which 65-year-old Ronald Poppo was brutally attacked by Rudy Eugene, better known as the “Miami Zombie” earlier in May? A naked Eugene chewed off Poppo’s face, and many, including us, thought the homeless man would not survive. Yet, after several surgeries at Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami, Poppo is now awake, alert, and sharing vivid details about the incident that shocked the entire world.
In recent reports obtained by CBS Miami, Poppo told police, “He attacked me. He just ripped me to ribbons. He chewed up my face. He plucked out my eyes. Basically, that’s all there is to say about it.” As a result, doctors say Poppo lost his eyesight, nearly 80 percent of his face including his nose, and was accidentally shot by police in the chest when they were trying to remove Eugene from him.
“He smashed my face into the sidewalk,” Poppo continued. “My face is all bent and mashed up. My eyes, my eyes got plucked out. He was strangling me in wrestling holds at the same time he was plucking out my eyes.” The attack lasted 18-minutes until finally Eugene was shot and killed by police, leaving Poppo bleeding and fighting for his life.
Many believed the “Miami Zombie” was intoxicated with the street drug, “bath salts,” but after an autopsy was conducted, neither human flesh nor unidentified pills were found in Eugene’s system. There were positive traces of marijuana, however.
Knowing his attacker before the incident, Poppo recalls, “For a very short moment of time, I thought he was a good guy. But he just went and turned berserk. He apparently didn’t have a good day at the beach, and he, he was coming back. And I guess he took it out, took it out on me or something. I don’t know.”
As one of the most bizarre stories of the summer, it gives us goosebumps to hear these chilling details. But, we’re happy to report Poppo survived and now lives to tell his story.
