On Saturday, the 34-year-old wide receiver was arrested after allegedly headbutting Lozada during an intense argument. Lozada claims the altercation occurred after she confronted Johnson about a receipt for a box of condoms.
Johnson reportedly grew upset and struck Lozada before she ran to a neighbor’s house and called police. The responding officer said Lozada had a 3-inch cut on her forehead while Johnson had no visible marks or bruises. When asked about the dispute, Johnson agreed there was an argument over the receipt but said Lozada had attacked him.
Johnson was arrested and charged with simple domestic battery and was released early Sunday morning on $2,500 bond. Adam Swickle, his defense attorney, said an order has been issued to prevent Johnson from contacting Lozada.
Just 24 hours after the incident, the Miami Dolphins released Johnson from the team; ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter reports this latest stunt was the last straw.
“Johnson, 34, has been battling for a spot on the team after a disappointing season with the New England Patriots in 2011.
Only five days earlier, first-year Dolphins head coach Joe Philbin said Johnson’s roster spot could be in jeopardy if he didn’t temper his freewheeling behavior. Johnson annoyed the coach frequently using profanity during a session with reporters.”
Johnson and Lozada married on July 4 in Miami. Their VH1 reality show Ev and Ocho is set to debut September 3.
