What we tell ourselves: “I’m sure he’s just kidding.” Usually said after Mr. So-and-so embarrasses us in public, makes a bad joke at our expense or gets caught saying something off color to his boys about us.
Why we say it: Our feelings are hurt, but we don’t want to appear too “sensitive.”
Why this is a problem: Words matter. And if someone’s words are hurting you, that’s a problem. Plus, it’s pretty disrespectful to talk badly about someone, especially someone you know intimately.
If a guy regularly says things that hurt you—even if he’s trying to be funny—it may be time to reconsider the relationship instead of trying to re-jigger your feelings.
