Just hours after the singer’s unexpected death, the Grammys called on Jennifer Hudson for a touching rendition of “I Will Always Love You.” At the Billboard Music Awards, John Legend made us smile with his version of “The Greatest Love of All.” And even Houston’s Sparkle co-star Jordin Sparks did her part to honor the beloved vocalist.
But none of the tributes have been anything to write home about.
At a press conference in May, BET Networks revealed their preliminary plans to honor the fallen icon at this year’s awards show. Stephen G. Hill, President of Music Programming and Specials, said that the show would “deliver” and with the recent news of Cissy Houston honoring her daughter, they might be on the right track.
While no other names have been revealed, a source for the network did confirm that Cissy would be joined on stage with “a few top divas.” Hill added via Twitter:
“Boom! Everyone we wanted for the Whitney Houston tribute is locked in…and it’s unbelievable! […] The Whitney Houston Tribute for the BET Awards. So classy. So right. You’re gonna love it. i’m sure. :) July 1st on BET.”
So who are these “top divas?” We’ll have to wait and see, but here are a few ideas…
