Attention celebrities: Forget club appearance checks. There’s money to be made in the American education system!
Atlantic City High School reportedly paid R&B singer Ashanti a whopping $20,000 for her appearance on June 1.
Ashanti spent the day leading assemblies, meeting privately with students and giving an interview to the school’s radio station. Throughout the day, she encouraged students to stay in school and stay focused.
School officials said the hefty payment was typical for a celebrity speaker and the funds were paid through “a district budget account designed for the improvement of instructional services.”
“She was paid like any other vendor,” said Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum Donna Haye. “We budget for special events and saw this as a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. We wanted to bring in someone young who would connect with the students.”
Ashanti, a Youth Ambassador for the Boys and Girls Club of America, also met with students in the local club’s Champions of Youth program while visiting.
