The 33-year-old singer will play Sugar Ray Leonard in Hands of Stone, scheduled to begin filming later this year. He will star alongside Robert De Niro and Gael García Bernal.
Usher says he’s been spending a lot of time in London preparing for the role.
“I’m in preparation for a very incredible role,” he told the BBC. “If you see me in the corners boxing, I’m doing that while working on this album.”
Over the span of his career, Leonard won several world titles including a gold medal at the 1976 Olympics in Montreal.
Usher is set to release his seventh studio album later this year. His lead single “Climax” is currently No. 45 on Billboard’s Hot 100 chart.
