Lifetime sure knew what they were doing when they cast their all-black adaption of Steel Magnolias.
Queen Latifah (M’Lynn), Alfre Woodard (Ouiser), Phylicia Rashad (Clairee), Jill Scott (Truvy), Adepero Oduye (Annelle) and Rashad’s daughter, Condola Rashad (Shelby) round out the all-star cast.
Latifah will also serve as executive producer as Kenny Leon (The Mountaintop, Stick Fly) directs the film set to premiere later this year.
The 2012 remake is adapted from the 1989 film screenplay about a group of women sticking together through their darkest days and moments of triumph. The original film starred Sally Field, Dolly Parton, Shirley MacLaine, Daryl Hannah, Olympia Dukakis and Julia Roberts.
“The caliber of talent associated with this film is astounding and falls in line with our strategy to make Lifetime a first stop for the industry’s best both in front of and behind the camera,” said Lifetime’s president and general manager Nancy Dubuc.
“[…] We could not be more thrilled and honored for them to bring Robert Harling’s poignant story about the strength of women to a whole new generation.”
Production will begin next month in Atlanta.
