The network has announced it is producing a new TV movie based on the legendary group; the film will be the first in a series of music biopics that VH1 is creating.
“The reality of this brings me to tears because I am seeing one of my dreams come to life,” says group member Chili. “I always felt our story had to be told.”
Tionne “T-Boz” Watkins, Rozonda “Chili” Thomas and the late Lisa “Left Eye” Lopes shot to fame in 1991 with their debut album Ooooooohhh… On the TLC Tip, which included hits such as “Ain’t 2 Proud 2 Beg” and “Baby-Baby-Baby.” The group followed up with the wildly popular albums CrazySexyCool and FanMail, which garnered millions of copies sold, Grammys and dedicated fans worldwide. It was the devastating and untimely death of Left Eye that ultimately rocked the group to the core, but the remaining members still stand strong and have since worked through the pain. Two more albums, 3D and Now & Forever: The Hits, were released in the early 2000s.
Writer Kate Lanier is on board to script the biopic. In the past, Lanier wrote scripts for “What’s Love Got To Do With It,” “Beauty Shop” and other film. Chili and T-Boz will assist in the making of the film as consultants and producers.
“I’m just overjoyed. I appreciate [VH1 EVP] Jeff Olde and everyone on staff at VH1 that took interest in us, thank you,” T-Boz says. “Kate Lanier is amazing. I’m honored to work with her I love her art. Well here we go on another TLC ride and I can’t wait. Like Biggie said ‘Now if ya don’t know, now ya knowwwww.”
