With her larger-than-life, commanding presence and relatable demeanor, Tasha Smith has managed to enchant audiences nationwide for over 15 years. Since her humble Hollywood beginnings, she’s gone on to star in a plethora of films, most notably in Tyler Perry’s Why Did I Get Married? and Why Did I Get Married Too? series touching on the trials and tribulations of married life. In the aftermath of the films’ successes, her infectious character Angela will now debut in a TBS spinoff show entitled For Better or Worse. The recently married actress sat down with UPTOWN on the eve of her new series’ premiere to talk marriage, Tyler Perry controversy and her newly revamped role.
You recently married. Has there ever been a day when you asked yourself “Why did I get married?”
I tell myself “I’m so grateful that I got married.” When I think about the friendship, the camaraderie, the love, it’s just like “Wow!” Not that people don’t have problems and ask themselves those questions and I think that people should ask themselves those questions. But most of the time, Iwant to say “Thank you God for my marriage.” It’s so awesome to have a best friend, someone that I can be transparent with, not have any shame with, and that I can talk to without any judgment. Someone I can tell my secrets to!
Did you or any other cast members from Why Did I Get Married help with the creation of For Better Or Worse?
Well, Tyler created the show and Michael Jai White and myself came on board. Tyler has ten episodes that we shot already planned out and when we go on to further episodes and get picked up, I’m sure we’ll be involved in helping to develop some of the future ones.
Do you think that shows like For Better or Worse will have any impact on marriage in the black community?
