Lopes, 25, is a business management student studying in Great Britain and is the first winner to come out of Angola. She won the judges over with her evident beauty, but also with her captivating responses to the night’s questions.
“Any racist needs to seek help,” Lopes says after being asked about being one of the few Blacks ever crowned Miss Universe. “It’s not normal in the 21st century to think in that way.”
She says that with her new title she wants to help her country escape their past of war and impoverishment, while also helping to fight the AIDS epidemic worldwide.
“As Miss Angola I’ve already done a lot to help my people. I’ve worked with various social causes. I work with poor kids, I work in the fight against HIV. I work to protect the elderly and I have to do everything that my country needs,” she said. “I think now as Miss Universe I will be able to do much more.”
